What a day.

The Doncaster Business Showcase 2026 was packed with energy from the moment the doors opened. There was a real buzz in the room, steady footfall, positive conversations, and a strong sense of local businesses backing one another.

As Head of Marketing at Create Property Group, I’m incredibly proud of how our team showed up.

 

Create Property Group In Full Force

This wasn’t just one arm of the business attending.

We had the whole of Create Property Group represented:

• Create Properties – Our Build Team

• Create Living – Our lettings & estate agency team

• Create Property Group – All things property investing

It was fantastic to see our construction, investment, and estate agency services standing side by side, demonstrating how we support clients across the full property journey.

Seeing the team together, engaging confidently and professionally, was a proud moment.

I really enjoyed spending time with the girls at this great event, KUDOS again to Doncaster Council for putting on an incredible show, whilst their team always do a great job, a special mention to Heather Hamilton who is the organisor of the event.

 

The Buzz Around the Stand

From early on, there was a consistent flow of visitors. We spoke to homeowners, landlords, investors, fellow business owners and professionals across a range of sectors.

The conversations were genuinely positive.

People were curious about:

• Growing wealth through property

• Reliable construction partnerships

• Selling or letting homes in Doncaster

• Project management support

It was refreshing to see so many ambitious individuals looking to build, invest, and grow locally.

 

Higher & Lower – The M&S Hamper Challenge

We also brought a little bit of fun to the event.

Our Higher & Lower game gave visitors the chance to test their luck and win an M&S hamper. It created engagement, laughter, and some healthy competition throughout the day.

It wasn’t just about the prize, it was about interaction & FUN. We were definitely the loudest and most fun stand at the show

Exhibiting is about creating connections, not just collecting business cards.

And judging by the smiles and conversations around our stand, it worked.

 

The Power of Showing Up

Events like this remind you how important visibility & connecting with people really is. Its great to get away from the laptop & speak to people.

In business, especially in property, relationships matter. Being present in the room, shaking hands, listening to people’s ambitions, and sharing what we do, that’s what builds trust.

Top 5 Digital Marketing Mistakes Tradespeople Make (And How to Fix Them)

If you’re a tradesperson in 2026 and you’re still saying:

“I don’t need social media.”
“My work speaks for itself.”
“Word of mouth is enough.”

Then I need to be honest with you.

You’re at risk.

I’ve worked with trades across construction, plumbing, electrical, joinery, roofing and more and the gap between those growing and those struggling isn’t skill.

It’s visibility.

Our CEO Ryan often tells us “I have a face for Radio not TV” but even Ryan understands the importance of having a personal brand.

Here are the Top 5 Digital Marketing Mistakes Tradespeople Make and how to fix them.

1. Hiding Behind the Work Instead of Showing the Work

You might be brilliant on the tools.

But if nobody sees it, nobody knows.

Too many trades:

• Post one photo every few months

• Never show their face

• Never explain what they’re doing

• Only post finished jobs

What clients actually want to see:

• Progress shots

• Problem solving

• Before & after

• You explaining what’s happening

• Your personality (This is my TOP TIP to you)

People buy from people.

The trades who used to say “I don’t want to go on camera” are now the ones winning the jobs, because clients trust who they can see.

Fix it:
Start filming 30–60 second clips on-site explaining what you’re doing. No polish needed. Just real.

2. Having No Clear Brand or Identity

A logo from 2008.
A random Facebook banner.
Different colours everywhere.
No consistent message.

That’s not a brand.

That’s noise.

Even small trade businesses need:

• A clear name

• Consistent colours

• A recognisable tone

• A simple message

If you want to charge premium rates, your brand needs to look premium.

Fix it:
Standardise your visuals and your message. You don’t need a £10k rebrand, just clarity and consistency.

3. No Google Presence (This Is Huge)

This is the biggest mistake I see.

Trades rely entirely on:

• Referrals

• Facebook groups

• Word of mouth

Meanwhile, your potential customer is typing:

“Builder in Doncaster”
“Electrician near me”
“Roofer South Yorkshire”

And you don’t appear.

If you don’t have:

• A Google Business Profile

• Reviews

• Updated photos

• A simple website

You’re invisible to high-intent buyers.

Fix it:
Optimise your Google Business Profile. Ask every happy client for a review. Upload weekly job photos.

It’s free. And it works.

4. Posting Content That Doesn’t Educate

Most trade content is:

• “Another job done.”

• “Happy customer.”

• “Before & after.”

That’s fine.

But the content that builds authority explains things.

Examples:

• “Why your extension quote varies so much.”

• “3 things to check before hiring a plumber.”

• “Why this roof failed.”

• “What this crack actually means.”

When you educate, you:

• Build trust

• Position yourself as expert

• Attract better clients

• Filter out time-wasters

Fix it:
Once a week, post one piece of content that teaches something.

Simple. Powerful.

5. Treating Marketing as Optional

This is the mindset shift.

Tradespeople invest in:

• Tools

• Vans

• Training

• Equipment

But see marketing as an expense.

It’s not.

Marketing is oxygen.

If you are not promoting your business in 2026, do not be surprised if your business struggles in 2027.

The market is changing.

Clients research first.
They compare.
They check reviews.
They look at Instagram.
They watch videos.

The best trades now:

• Film weekly

• Post consistently

• Collect testimonials

• Show personality

• Build a personal brand

And they are booked months in advance.

The Harsh Truth

You can be the best tradesperson in your area…

But if someone slightly less skilled is more visible, more trustworthy online, and easier to find…

They’ll win the job.

That’s reality.

The construction industry offers far more career opportunities than many people realise. 

While trades like bricklaying, Joiners, Electricians and plumbing are well known, there are also offsite roles such as architecture, quantity surveying, design, and project management that play a crucial part in the sector. (These are known as off-site).

Whether you are a young person looking for a career path or a parent exploring options for your child, this guide will help you understand where to start and how construction can lead to a stable, well-paid, and rewarding future.

Onsite vs Offsite Careers in Construction

This industry is not just about building, it involves planning, designing, and managing projects too. You don’t have to work directly on-site to have a successful career in construction.

Onsite Construction Trades (Hands-On Roles)

The below roles involve working directly on-site, building homes, commercial properties, and infrastructure. (Not including specialist trades).

• Bricklaying – Laying bricks and blocks to create houses/structures.
• Carpentry & Joinery – Working with wood to create frameworks, roofing, Stud walls, Internal doors, and/or construct furniture etc
• Plumbing & Heating – Installing and maintaining water and heating systems. Bathroom renovations installing showers, toilets, sinks etc
• Electrical Work – Wiring buildings and ensuring electrical safety, this can lead to CCTV installs, Alarms & modern Smart Features inc cinema rooms
• Plastering & Rendering – Finishing interior and exterior walls to a smooth or textured finish.
• Painters & Decorators – The finishers of all the trades, these are usually the last trade to leave a site.
• Groundworks & Civil Engineering – Preparing sites, drainage, and foundations.
• Not forgetting the following: Tilers, Scaffolders, Landscape Gardners, Fabricators, Machine Drivers, Labourers etc 

These trades are essential to getting the job done, and skilled workers in these fields are always in demand.

There is a HUGE Shortage of skilled trades right now!

Offsite Careers in Construction (Planning & Professional Roles)

These careers focus on designing, managing, and organising construction projects.

• Architecture & Building Design – Designing buildings and ensuring they meet planning regulations.
• Quantity Surveying – Managing costs and making sure projects stay within budget.
• Construction Management – Overseeing projects from start to finish.
• Structural Engineering – Ensuring buildings are safe and can withstand stress.
• Health & Safety Officers – Making sure sites operate safely.
• Interior & Spatial Designers – Creating functional and aesthetically pleasing interiors.

Offsite roles support the success of on-site work and ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.

Current Shortage of Skilled Labour

The UK is currently facing a significant demographic challenge in construction, characterised by a substantial portion of its workforce nearing retirement age and an insufficient influx of new apprentices to fill the emerging gaps.

Retirement Trends:

• Aging Workforce: Approximately one-third of the current construction workforce is aged over 50, indicating that a significant number of workers are expected to retire within the next decade.

• Retirement Intentions: Only 15% of UK construction workers intend to continue working beyond retirement age, compared to a 29% cross-industry average. 

Apprenticeship Trends:

• Current Apprenticeship Starts: In the 2023/2024 period, approximately 33,000 new apprentices began their training in the construction sector across Great Britain

• Required Apprenticeship Starts: To meet the industry’s annual recruitment requirement of 50,300 workers, the number of apprenticeship starts needs to triple from current figures. 

Implications:

The disparity between the high percentage of workers approaching retirement and the relatively low number of new apprentices entering the field underscores a looming skills shortage in the UK construction industry. Addressing this issue necessitates concerted efforts to attract and train new talent to ensure the sector’s sustainability and capacity to meet future demands.

How to Get Started in Construction

1. Consider an Apprenticeship

One of the best ways to get started is through an apprenticeship, which allows you to earn while you learn.

We work closely with the likes of Doncaster College, which provides a structured and supportive apprenticeship programme. We collaborate with Jamie at Doncaster College, who ensures that students are properly vetted and understand the commitment required.

We don’t just take on apprentices—we train them to succeed.

2. Gain Work Experience

Before committing to a full apprenticeship, work experience can be a great way to see what suits you best.

Recently, we have been working with The Hayfield School to support students like Ollie, who is considering a future in construction. His school has been actively involved in his career development, providing structured career guidance.

Here’s a recent message from his school:

“Ollie has recently had a careers adviser appointment to discuss his post-16 plans, and I am sure he has spoken to you about the possibility of an apprenticeship. Would it be possible to arrange another visit in the New Year to review his progress?”

This highlights the importance of hands-on experience in helping young people make the right career choices.

3. Explore Offsite Roles Through Further Education

If you are more interested in design, management, or engineering, pursuing a construction-related qualification at college or university may be the right path. Many universities and technical colleges offer specialist courses in:

• Architecture
• Construction Project Management
• Quantity Surveying

• And Many more,

These courses help students develop the technical skills needed for offsite roles in the industry.

If you’re considering a career in construction, don’t just look at the trades, explore everything the industry has to offer. Whether it’s working hands-on as a bricklayer, managing projects, or designing the next big development, construction is more than just building. Try work experience in both onsite and offsite roles to find what excites you most. The best way to succeed is to learn from those already doing it, ask questions, get involved, and be willing to graft, It can be tough at times, I can promise you that!”

Hiring the right builder is one of the most important steps in any construction project. Whether you are building a new home, adding an extension, or renovating, choosing a reputable contractor ensures a smooth experience. The wrong choice can lead to delays, financial loss, or poor workmanship.

This guide outlines the must-have, non-negotiable factors you should consider before hiring a builder.

My Top Tip: “If you’ve been reading our blogs or following us on social media, you’ll know I love to add a top tip—this one is no different.

Throw a curveball. Ask your builder how they deal with things when they go wrong. Better yet, ask them about their worst project and why.

You might not need to know all the details, but their reaction will tell you everything. Watch their body language, listen to their response, and see how they handle pressure. A confident, honest builder will be upfront, while hesitation or defensiveness could be a red flag.“

1. Proof of Previous Work and Experience

A builder’s past projects are a strong indicator of their quality and reliability. Before hiring, ensure you search social media or their website to check previous work. This is a little out dated now but some of the old school builders still have a portfolio of completed work so ask for this if there is no social media or website available, ensure to include before-and-after images. Visiting past sites can also provide insight into their standards.

Speaking to former clients is another essential step. Request references from at least three previous customers and ask about their experience. If possible, choose a builder with experience in projects similar in size and complexity to yours.

2. Client Recommendations and Reviews

A reputable builder should have a proven track record of satisfied clients. Online reviews offer valuable insight into customer experiences. Check platforms such as Google Reviews & Trustpilot, don’t just rely on ‘Bob from the pub’.

Speaking directly to past clients can provide further assurance. Request contact numbers for at least three references and ask specific questions about communication, reliability, and overall satisfaction.

-Did the job run as expected?
-What were the challenges?

-Completed on time & to budget?

3. Insurance and Accreditations

Hiring a builder without proper insurance exposes you to financial risk. Ensure they have:

• Public Liability Insurance (minimum £5 million cover recommended)
• Employer’s Liability Insurance if they have staff on-site
• Structural Warranty Insurance for large projects

Accreditations from professional bodies can indicate credibility but not limited to. Look for memberships with:

• Federation of Master Builders (FMB)
• National Federation of Builders (NFB)
• TrustMark (government-endorsed quality scheme)

4. Detailed Quote and Payment Terms

A vague quote can lead to unexpected expenses. Always request a fully itemised quote that breaks down:

• Pre-Construction costs/Prelims
• OH&P (overheads & Profit)
• Materials
• Labour
• Additional costs such as site clearance, scaffolding, skips etc

Payment should be structured in stages. Typically, this includes an initial deposit, progress payments, and a final payment on completion. Be cautious of builders requesting large upfront payments.

Again, I have filmed a podcast on this, Cashflow is king, when its projected correctly. I could talk about this one until the cows come home, you could expect deposits ranging from 10% – 25% followed by interim payments, usually after stage completions so after 1st fix complete, completion of plastering, followed by another payment upon completion of 2nd fix works such as kitchen installed, bathrooms & heating system etc with payment of the contract value upto 97.5% at the end of the project upon completion with the 2.5% retention held for a period of 6-12 months depending on the project size etc. 

It is not unusual to hire an external Project Manager who can act on your behalf to manage this process for you. Again there are so many benefits to this, check out out FAQ Page for more info or watch a video on this here. A project manager would be responsible to plan & deliver the project on your behalf bringing the expertise and ensure your project is cash-flowing giving you peace of mind you are not over paying or even stressing the contractor by under-paying.

5. Legal Contract and Project Timeline

A written contract protects both parties. It should include:

• A clear scope of work
• Agreed start and completion dates
• A structured payment schedule
• Warranty details

Agreeing on a timeline ensures expectations are aligned. A contingency clause should be included in case of unexpected delays such as weather conditions or material shortages.

Do not just rely on a fag packet contract, take this seriously!

6. Planning Permission and Building Regulations

Failure to comply with regulations can lead to fines or legal disputes. Builders should be familiar with local planning laws and handle applications when necessary. Most are but you need to enforce this and ensure its done with proof.

Ensure they provide the relevant certificates of compliance for electrical and plumbing work. In new builds or extensions, the builder should also coordinate with building control inspectors. These certificates should be released upon completion of the final account.

7. Site Management and Communication

A well-managed site improves efficiency and safety. Before work begins, confirm:

• Who will be your main point of contact & get their details
• How often you will receive updates & how regular should you expect meetings
• How they manage material deliveries, waste disposal, and site cleanliness

Discuss their process for resolving disputes. Open and professional communication is essential for a successful project. This should be detailed within your contract. If you are unsure about this or find yourself in a difficult situation, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

8. Warranty and Aftercare Support

A good builder stands by their work. Ask about the defects liability period, which ensures that any minor snags are fixed after completion. Workmanship guarantees should cover at least 6-12 months.

Materials often come with manufacturer warranties. Ensure these are documented, particularly for roofing, insulation, and heating systems. This document is commonly know as the O&M Manual, some people call it the handover documents.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

• No physical address or landline number
• Unrealistically low quotes compared to competitors – Ask why!
• Demands for cash-only payments – Turn them away!
• Pressure to sign contracts quickly – This is just strange, take your time!
• Poor or non-existent online reviews
• Disqualified Directors on Companies House
• No Evidence of Insurance or Accreditation/Qualifications

Final Thoughts

You may think I am mad telling you this but I can assure you, 80% of the work Create were instructed to carry out in 2024 was from rogue people pretending to be builders that had left home owners/Investors in distress. With a little more upfront due-Diligence, this could have been avoided.

Choosing wisely contributes to a stress-free experience and a high-quality outcome. By following this checklist, you can confidently select a contractor who meets your needs.
